BUKUYA, Kassanda District — An 18-year-old woman died early this morning following a suspected abortion, as relatives tried to transfer her from a local clinic to a better-equipped health facility.
The deceased, identified as Babirye Mary of Ntonyeze cell, Bukuya Town Council, was an apprentice hairdresser at Mama Cyrus’s salon in Bukuya town.
According to her mother, Ms. Nakigudde Specioza, Babirye reported for work as usual on Thursday, April 17, 2026. She left the salon at around 6:00 p.m. but did not return home, raising concern.
The deceased did not own a phone, and initial searches were unsuccessful. At about 8:00 p.m., the salon owner told Nakigudde that Babirye had left for home hours earlier.
At approximately 4:00 a.m. today, Nakigudde received a call from Mama Cyrus informing her that her daughter was at Musawo Gerald’s clinic in Bukuya in critical condition. On arrival, Nakigudde found her daughter lying on the floor, unable to speak, and bleeding heavily from her genitals.
When asked what happened, Musawo Gerald reportedly said the girl arrived at his clinic already bleeding, and that he had called Mama Cyrus to alert relatives to transfer her to a better facility because she was not responding to his treatment.
Nakigudde contacted a one Semakula, who provided a vehicle to evacuate Babirye. She was pronounced dead on the way while the family was still deciding which facility to take her to.
The mother reported the incident to police. The suspected cause of death is excessive bleeding.
The body has been taken to Kassanda Health Centre IV mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Police say Musawo Gerald fled the scene during the incident. He is now a wanted suspect.
“I take this opportunity to remind our people that abortion is an offence in Uganda. Any person who carries out, procures, or aids an abortion, or is an accessory before or after the act, commits an offence,” said SSP Lameck Kigozi, police spokesperson for the Wamala region.
Kigozi urged girls to avoid abortion due to its life-threatening risks and serious legal penalties. He advised sexually active people of legal age to use contraceptives or practice abstinence.
