Kiboga, Uganda – Police in Kiboga have arrested eight individuals for attempting to marry off a 16-year-old girl in Kagoga village, Kyomya subcounty, on April 16th, 2026.
The suspects, including the girl’s parents, Kiyingi Yunus and Luwedde Robina, her aunt, Namubiru Allen, the groom, Kawuki Mathias, and his parents, Sande Walulya David and Tusibira Esther, were apprehended during an intelligence-led operation.
The victim, a Senior 3 student at Bukomero SSS, was born on December 6th, 2010, making her 16 years old at the time of the attempted marriage. Dowry items, including sugar, soap, rice, meat, 3 Gomesi, and 2 Kanzus, were recovered as exhibits.
The suspects are being held at Kiboga Central police station, facing charges of defilement and procuring defilement, pending sanctioning by the Resident State Attorney of Kiboga.
SSP Lameck Kigozi, police spokesperson for Wamala region, emphasized that parents should be aware that the legal age for marriage in Uganda is 18 years and above.
