    _NWOYA — May 4, 2026_

Seven people are dead and 16 others injured after a Nile Star Coaches bus collided head-on with a trailer in Nwoya District early Sunday morning, police have confirmed.

The fatal crash happened at approximately 1:15 a.m. in Lapok Mor Village. It involved bus registration number UBP 736U, an Isuzu bus belonging to Nile Star Coaches that was traveling from Arua, and a Benz Actros trailer, registration SSD 040A/SSD 498C.

    What happened
Preliminary police findings indicate the bus attempted to overtake two vehicles when it collided head-on with the oncoming trailer.

Four passengers died instantly at the scene. Sixteen survivors with injuries were rushed to Anak Hospital for treatment. Three of the injured later died while receiving medical care, bringing the total death toll to seven.

    Driver in custody
The bus driver, identified as Abugo Mandella Kadin, is now in police custody as investigations continue.

    Passengers raised concerns
Eyewitnesses who were on board told police the driver had been driving recklessly throughout the journey. Passengers reportedly raised concerns about his driving, but the conductor allegedly dismissed them instead of taking action.

Uganda Police has confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the crash.
