KASSANDA — Police in Kassanda District are set to arraign two men in court for allegedly being in possession of stonebase material stolen from the Mityana–Mubende road construction site.
The suspects were arrested following a tip-off from Mr. Ngunule Sajon, Chairperson of the Workers Union at Energo Project Company, the firm contracted to construct the road.
According to police, on 19/06/2026, Sajon received information about individuals stealing stonebase from the contractor’s materials.
He led officers to the workplace of Sekyanzi Pascal in Kiwogo Cell, Kalamba Ward, Kiganda Town Council, where two heaps of stonebase were recovered.
A case was subsequently registered at Kiganda Police Station, leading to the arrest of:
1.Sekyanzi Pascal, 47, a resident of Nyanzi LC1, Kiganda Town Council, Kassanda District.
2.Kiyingi John, 58, a resident of Kigoloba LC1, Kasambya Parish, Kiganda Town Council.
Police investigations indicate that the theft of stonebase from Energo has been a recurring activity allegedly involving the two suspects in collusion with some individuals working with the contractor.
Bribery Attempt Foiled
In a related development, police also arrested a third man for attempting to bribe an investigating officer to secure the release of the two suspects.
On 22/06/2026, Wasswa Andrew, 25, of Kyamusota Village, Kawungera Parish, Kiganda Town Council, is accused of offering UGX 50,000 to No. 70419 D/C Auruku Peter, the investigating officer. Wasswa reportedly claimed to be a relative of the suspects.
He was arrested at the scene with the UGX 50,000 note recovered as an exhibit. He has been charged with giving a bribe to a public officer with intent to defeat justice.
Police say Wasswa will be produced in court after charges are sanctioned by the Resident State Attorney of Kassanda District.
Police Warning
SSP Lameck Kigozi, Police Spokesperson for Wamala Region, cautioned the public against stealing, scavenging, or dealing in road construction materials for the Mityana–Mubende project.
“Stealing government project materials will result in severe penal reprisals upon arrest and conviction,” Kigozi said.
All three suspects remain in custody pending court appearance.
