A teacher at Zion Secondary School Kirinda in Kiboga District is on the run after allegedly assaulting a Senior Two student with a hoe handle, leaving the student with serious injuries.
According to police, the incident occurred on 14/07/2026 at around 08:30 hours. The victim has been identified as Ndiwalana Arafat, 17, a resident of Kyato Village, Kasega Parish, Kapeke Sub-county, Kiboga District.
Police say Arafat left the classroom without tucking in his shirt and went to the school gate to ask Master Sserwadda Ken for permission to go out and get pocket money.
The teacher reportedly instructed the student to tuck in his shirt first, which he did. He was then told to return to class.
Upon returning to class, Arafat allegedly pulled his shirt out again in protest. This angered Master Sserwadda, who picked up a hoe handle, followed the student into the classroom, and struck him on the back and neck.
The assault left Arafat with an injury to his right eye and he collapsed. Fellow students raised an alarm, prompting other staff members to intervene.
The student was given first aid at the school to stop the bleeding before being rushed to a clinic for further treatment. Police say he is now in stable condition.
When he recovered, Arafat reported a case of torture at Kiboga Police Station. Statements from the complainant and witnesses have been recorded.
Master Sserwadda fled the school immediately after the incident. Police say efforts are underway to apprehend him.
*Police Appeal to Teachers*
Speaking on the matter, SSP Lameck Kigozi, the Police Spokesperson for Wamala Region, urged teachers to exercise restraint when handling learners.
_“We appeal to teachers to always try to control their temper when dealing with students, some of whom are just stubborn and do things deliberately to provoke such actions from their unsuspecting teachers. Teachers should at all times act professionally when administering punishments to students,”_ SSP Kigozi said.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
