Kampala, Uganda – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, also the leader of the National Resistance Movement, is set to embark on a nationwide tour, sparking speculation about his intentions for the 2026 presidential elections.
Having led Uganda since 1986, Museveni has navigated term limits and age restrictions to remain in power.
Museveni’s six-term presidency has been marked by parliamentary interventions that removed term limits in 2004 and age limits in 2017.
Despite reaching 75 years, the age limit that would have barred him from contesting, Museveni is poised to run for another term.
The tour, scheduled to start in Bukedea district on Wednesday, November 7, 2024, aims to promote his presidential initiatives, including the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Operation Wealth Creation (OWC).
Museveni has emphasized the importance of economic empowerment and agricultural development in Uganda.
Critics view the tour as a disguised campaign for another term, given Museveni’s history of using such events to build support.
With his sixth term nearing its end, many question whether this tour is genuinely focused on connecting with citizens or laying groundwork for re-election.
Museveni’s presidential initiatives focus on economic growth and development through the Parish Development Model (PDM), Operation Wealth Creation (OWC), and the Four-Acre Model.
These initiatives aim to promote economic empowerment, agricultural development, and skills development in key sectors.
However, Museveni’s rule has been marred by controversies, including the removal of term limits in 2004 and age limits in 2017, allowing him to extend his presidency.
His government has also been criticized for authoritarian tendencies, human rights violations, and suppression of opposition.
These concerns have fueled speculation about the true purpose of his nationwide tour.
As Museveni prepares to meet with local leaders, including Speaker of Parliament Annet Anita Among, the nation watches with interest.
Will this tour pave the way for another term, or is it a genuine effort to promote economic growth and development?
