A somber mood has settled over the Ugandan football community as news breaks of the sudden and tragic death of Abubakar Lawal, a Nigerian national and professional footballer for Vipers Sports Club.
According to a statement from the Kajjansi Police Division, Lawal allegedly fell from the third floor of Voicemall Shopping Arcade on the morning of February 24, 2025.
Preliminary reports indicate that Lawal had arrived at the shopping mall to meet his friend, Omary Naima, a Tanzanian national.
Naima reported that she left Lawal in the room preparing tea and proceeded to a game center within the mall.
Tragically, Lawal reportedly fell from the balcony shortly after, at approximately 8:00 AM. Despite being rushed to Entebbe Referral Hospital, Lawal was pronounced dead.
Items recovered from Lawal’s black backpack include two smartphones, a pair of open shoes, headsets, a training kit, and chargers.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are working to retrieve CCTV footage and conduct thorough interrogations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
While the circumstances of Lawal’s fall remain unclear, preliminary investigations have raised suspicions of possible foul play.
The Kajjansi Police Division has assured that further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer for the Kampala Metropolitan Police, has urged patience and cooperation as the authorities work to uncover the truth behind this tragic event.
