Kampala, Uganda – The Electoral Commission’s National Voters Register Update is off to a smooth start, with Chairperson Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama inspecting the exercise on its first day at Kamwokya LC1 Market and Kalerwe Market.

The update, which will run until February 10, 2025, is taking place at all parishes across the country.

During his inspection, Justice Byabakama addressed concerns from politicians who requested an extension of the registration period, citing that the allocated three weeks were insufficient.

However, Byabakama reassured that the three-week timeframe is adequate, stating,

“Three weeks are enough, and no time will be added to update the registers if the three weeks are utilized effectively.”

Byabakama’s remarks come as some politicians had expressed concerns that the registration period was too short, and that many eligible voters might miss the opportunity to register.

However, the Electoral Commission Chairperson emphasized that the commission had made adequate preparations to ensure that the exercise is conducted efficiently and effectively.

“The Electoral Commission has made all necessary arrangements to ensure that the National Voters Register Update is conducted smoothly and successfully. We urge all eligible voters to take advantage of this opportunity to register and exercise their right to vote,” Byabakama added.

The National Voters Register Update is a crucial step in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the electoral process.
