Mubende, Uganda – A tragic incident occurred at the Nakayima Tree Shrine in Mubende district on Wednesday morning, leaving four people dead and three others injured.

The incident happened when a branch of the Nakayima tree fell, striking eight people who had gathered at the shrine for traditional ceremonies.

According to eyewitnesses, one person died instantly, while seven others were rushed to Mubende Regional Hospital.

Two people died upon arrival, and another person, a child who was put on oxygen, also died while receiving treatment.

The incident has sparked widespread speculation, with many wondering whether it was an accident or a sacrifice by the Nakayima spirits.

The shrine is a popular destination for people seeking miracles, healing, and wealth, especially during the month of December.

The Nakayima Tree Shrine is situated in Mubende District, approximately 149km from Kampala, the capital city, on the Kampala-Fort Portal Highway, just 4km from Mubende town.

The tree stands at an impressive 40 meters high and is believed to be 400-500 years old.

President Museveni once visited this tree

According to legend, the tree was named after Nakayima, the wife of King Ndahura, a ruler of the Bachwezi people, who were believed to be demigods. The Bachwezi people were said to possess supernatural powers and did not die natural deaths.

The Nakayima tree is believed to possess healing powers, including the ability to cure infertility and diseases.

This has made the shrine a popular destination for locals and people from afar seeking relief from various complications.

Following the incident, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Mubende, Hajji Umar Lule Mawiya, has suspended all gatherings and ceremonies at the shrine until further notice.

This decision aims to allow the police and relevant authorities to investigate the incident and ensure the safety of visitors.

The police are currently working to identify the victims, who are believed to have come from outside Mubende district to worship at the shrine.
