Five people, including incumbent Councilor of Kisekende A Ibrahim Kiggundu, alias Machete, and aspiring MP for Mubende Municipality Richard Bob Kyamanywa, were arrested today during a protest in Namagogo, Mubende.

Both Kiggundu and Kyamanywa are members of the National Unity Platform (NUP) party.

The protest was sparked by a three-month power outage in the area, which had caused significant disruptions to daily life.

Residents had taken to the streets, blocking the Mubende highway and demanding that the authorities take action to address the power shortage.

The arrests were made as police attempted to disperse the protesters.

However, in a swift response to the community’s concerns, Umeme, the national power utility company, later delivered a new transformer to the village. The transformer was installed under police protection, and power has been restored to the area.

Residents, who had grown accustomed to the darkness, expressed their relief and gratitude at the return of electricity.

The restoration of power is expected to bring a sense of normalcy back to the village, with businesses reopening and residents able to access basic services like lighting, refrigeration, and communication.

Despite the positive development, the community is still demanding the release of the five individuals who were arrested during the protest.

However, with Christmas just around the corner, it appears that Kyamanywa, Machete, and their fellow detainees will have to spend the holiday season behind bars.

The community is calling for the authorities to drop all charges against those arrested and to release them immediately.
