Authorities in Ntungamo District have closed Muntuyera High School Kitunga following a student strike over allegations of harassment against a teacher.
The decision was made jointly by the Acting District Education Officer and the District Police Commander after a meeting with school stakeholders.
The strike, which began on Monday, was sparked by a letter penned by students urging school management to take disciplinary action against Deputy Headteacher Isaac Bagatuzayo, who is accused of harassment.
According to a student who wished to remain anonymous, the learners had lost trust in the teacher and demanded his dismissal.
In the letter, which was placed in the dining hall, students expressed their grievances and called for action to be taken against the deputy headteacher.
The students’ concerns had reportedly been building up over time, leading to the eventual strike.
The school’s closure has resulted in all students being sent home, and they will remain on break until the end of the Easter holiday.
The district authorities’ decision to close the school aims to restore order and stability, but the situation highlights the need for schools to prioritize student welfare and address concerns in a timely and effective manner.
