Kampala, Uganda – In a surprise move, Faridah Nambi, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer in the Kawempe North parliamentary by-election, has withdrawn her petition challenging the victory of National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola.
Nambi had filed the petition at the Electoral Commission, citing irregularities in the voting process and disputing Nalukoola’s victory.
However, in a sudden turn of events, she has decided to withdraw her petition.
Through her lawyers, Atwijukire Dennis Advocates, Nambi announced her decision to withdraw the petition, bringing an end to the controversy surrounding the by-election.
The reasons behind Nambi’s decision to withdraw the petition are not yet clear, but sources close to her campaign indicate that she may have decided to concede defeat and avoid further controversy.

Nalukoola’s victory had been gazetted by the Electoral Commission, paving the way for his swearing-in as the new Member of Parliament for Kawempe North.
With Nambi’s petition withdrawn, the path is now clear for Nalukoola to take his seat in Parliament.
A supporter of the National Unity Platform welcomed Nambi’s decision, saying it is a sign of maturity and respect for the democratic process.
“We commend Faridah Nambi for her decision to withdraw the petition. This is a sign of her commitment to democracy and the rule of law,” the supporter said.
Another NRM supporter also welcomed Nambi’s decision, advising her to redirect the funds initially allocated for the petition towards her campaign in the upcoming NRM primary elections.
The withdrawal of the petition brings to an end the controversy surrounding the Kawempe North by-election, and allows the constituents to move forward with their newly elected representative.
