Gulu, Uganda – A 16-year-old student, Joshua Leon Otim, has died after being injured in a violent clash between police, military, and National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters in Gulu City on December 6, 2025.
Otim, a student at Excell High School in Mukono District, was hit on the head with a blunt object during the incident and slipped into a coma. He succumbed to his injuries at St Mary’s Hospital Lacor in Gulu City.
His mother, Margret Acan, confirmed that her son was a victim of the violence that erupted when NUP presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi was campaigning in the city.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with Kyagulanyi expressing his sympathies to Otim’s family and demanding justice.
“No suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident,” said a police spokesperson, adding that investigations were ongoing.
Kyagulanyi, in a post on his X account, accused the police and military of attacking his supporters and demanded action from the Electoral Commission.
“Otim’s death underscores the ongoing complicity of the Electoral Commission and all other State institutions mandated to ensure a credible, free and fair electoral process,” he wrote.
This raises concerns about the safety of opposition supporters and the fairness of the upcoming 2026 General Election.
