The Ugandan Parliament is gearing up to approve the creation of new districts and constituencies, a move that would increase the number of Members of Parliament (MPs), despite presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi’s promise to reduce the number of MPs to save taxpayers’ money.
According to sources, today’s parliamentary session, chaired by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, is expected to give the green light to the creation of four new districts and additional constituencies.
Kasese and Tororo districts are among the areas where new districts and constituencies are to be created.
This move is likely to swell the number of MPs beyond the current 529, a stark contrast to Kyagulanyi’s campaign promise to reduce the number to at least 50.
Kyagulanyi’s National Unity Platform has been vocal about reducing the number of MPs to allocate more funds to essential services like healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
He argues that the current allocation of over Shs60 million per MP monthly is excessive, especially when compared to the underfunding of critical sectors.
The proposed creation of new districts and constituencies is expected to further strain the country’s finances, with many Ugandans questioning the prioritization of MPs’ allowances over basic services.
As the parliamentary session gets underway, all eyes are on the government to see if they will prioritize the interests of citizens or continue to expand the legislative body.
