Makindye West legislator Allan Ssewanyana has declared his intention to run in the 2026 parliamentary elections, despite being dropped by his party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), in favor of KCCA Speaker Zahara Luyirika.

Speaking at a Thanksgiving Mass held at Nsambya Gardens, Ssewanyana expressed disappointment over the party’s decision, saying he was never shown the vetting results that led to his exclusion.

“It’s unfortunate that even after answering all the vetting questions well and having strong support on the ground, my party did not give me the card,” he said. “Up to now, I have never seen the results to know where I failed.”

Ssewanyana, who has served two terms in parliament, has faced challenges, including spending two years in prison alongside the late Mohammad Ssegirinya, former MP for Kawempe North, over allegations of involvement in panga murders that claimed 25 lives in greater Masaka.

He was later released on court bail after the government failed to produce testimony linking him to the crime.

The embattled MP has now turned to voters, assuring them of his continued commitment to representing their interests.

“I want to assure my supporters that I will stand again for Makindye West MP. I won’t say how for now, but rest assured, I am coming back,” Ssewanyana said.

The NUP’s decision to endorse Luyirika  sparked mixed reactions, with some supporters welcoming her as a fresh voice, while others question the party’s choice.

As the election approaches, Makindye West is shaping up to be a closely contested constituency, with Ssewanyana’s next move likely to have significant implications for the area’s political landscape.
