Amolatar, Uganda – A journalist attached to Hot Fm 101.6 in Amolatar has been arrested for allegedly swindling over 3.2 million Ugandan shillings from local mobile money agents.
Odur Alphonse, alias “Captain Fegehege,” a mobile money agent and journalist, is accused of orchestrating a sophisticated online scam that targeted his own community on October 7, 2025.
According to police reports, Alphonse was contacted online by an individual named Okello George, who offered him a link to receive a large sum of money to boost his business.
However, the promise turned out to be a trap, and Alphonse was asked to deposit a substantial amount of money to “show his capability to repay” the fictitious company.
Alphonse allegedly approached over ten fellow agents, convincing them to send large “float” amounts to his telephone number with the promise that he would immediately withdraw and return the cash. However, instead of returning the money, he forwarded the entire sum to the online scammer.
Trusting his word, the agents complied. The victims and amounts lost include:
· Apio Juliet Orech: 500,000/=
· Obangakene Desmon: 400,000/=
· Apio Hilder: 350,000/=
· Nakyima Susan: 350,000/=
· Akubu Lidia: 450,000/=
· Abonyo Tabisa: 300,000/=
· Alweo Immaculate: 200,000/=
The victims of the scam include several mobile money agents who lost significant amounts of money. The police have registered a formal case of “Obtaining Money by False Pretence” at Amolatar Central Police Station (CPS).
SP PJ Okema, the Public Relations Officer for the North Kyoga Region, stated that Alphonse was arrested to support the investigation but was later given police bond.
The suspect has committed to repaying the complainants, raising hopes for an out-of-court settlement. However, the police are proceeding with a full investigation.
“These are purely scammers, and this is a very common practice in online business,” SP Okema emphasized. “We appeal to members of the public to be very careful with such hopeless opportunities and avoid accepting such requests.”
