Tensions have escalated in Kasambya County, Mubende district, as supporters of two prominent candidates clashed in a violent confrontation.
The incident occurred amid the upcoming National Resistance Movement (NRM) primaries, scheduled for later this month, where candidates will vie for the party’s flag bearer for the Member of Parliament position.
The violence allegedly involved supporters of incumbent MP Kabanda David and challenger Muhumuza Henry at Kyentulege village, Nabingoola sub-county, Mubende district on Monday 07-07-2031.
According to eyewitnesses, supporters of Kabanda David attacked supporters of Muhumuza Henry, resulting in two cars being crushed and one car being burnt.
Several people were also injured in the chaos, including one supporter of Muhumuza who was hit by a bullet in the leg.
The violent incident has raised questions about the level of preparedness and commitment to peaceful campaigns among the candidates.
Before the campaigns kicked off, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Mubende district, Mr. Mawiya, had called on candidates vying for the MP position to submit a roadmap and guidelines to ensure peaceful campaigns.
However, while Muhumuza Henry responded to the call, Kabanda David failed to turn up without giving any reason.
Muhumuza Henry condemned the violence, accusing Kabanda David’s supporters of causing chaos to intimidate his supporters.
“He is causing chaos to feed fear in us, but I’m requesting you to stand firm,” Henry said, urging his supporters to remain resolute.
In response, Kabanda David denied any involvement in the violence, claiming that his supporters were not responsible for the mayhem.
“It’s not true that my supporters have caused the chaos. Those goons who have been beating each other, we don’t know them. They were just paid by some people to come in and tarnish our area. Kasambya, we are peaceful people,” David said.
The incident has raised concerns about the role of security agencies in maintaining law and order during the campaigns.
Critics have accused security personnel of being silent and ineffective in preventing violence, despite the escalating tensions.
The NRM primaries are set to take place on the 17th of this month, and the outcome will determine the party’s flag bearer for the Member of Parliament position.
The violence in Kasambya County has cast a shadow over the electoral process, and stakeholders are calling for calm and peaceful campaigns.
