A devastating road crash occurred on March 25, 2025, in Namutumba District, resulting in the loss of two lives and leaving eight others injured. The accident took place at Mazuba, Maganda Sub County, along the Iganga-Mbale Highway.
According to preliminary investigations by the Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety, the crash involved three vehicles: a Tata Lorry (UBQ 901S), a Toyota Hiace (UBJ 358P), and an unknown vehicle.
The driver of the Toyota Hiace, who is currently at large, was traveling at high speed and attempted to overtake the Tata Lorry.
In an effort to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle, the driver of the Toyota Hiace swerved onto the side of the Tata Lorry, causing significant damage.
The Hiace’s roof was sheared off by the lorry’s front driver’s corner, resulting in the vehicle rolling multiple times.
The injured victims were rushed to Iganga Hospital for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were conveyed to the hospital’s mortuary.
Commenting on the incident, SP Kananura Michael, the spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety, urged all motorists to exercise extreme caution when overtaking and to adhere to speed limits to prevent such incidents.
“This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of speeding and unsafe overtaking on our roads,” SP Kananura said. “We appeal to all drivers to be more careful and responsible on the road to avoid such tragic incidents.”
Investigations are ongoing to apprehend the driver of the Toyota Hiace, who is currently at large.
The Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety has pledged to continue sensitizing the public on road safety measures to reduce the number of accidents on Ugandan roads.
