The Ministry of Health in Uganda has confirmed an outbreak of the highly contagious Ebola Sudan disease in Kampala.

According to Dr. Dianah Atwiine, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, a 32-year-old male nurse at Mulago National Referral Hospital has succumbed to the disease, with multiple others infected at the hospital.

The index case, who initially exhibited fever-like symptoms, sought treatment at various health facilities, including Mulago National Referral Hospital, Saidina Abubakar Islamic Hospital in Matugga, and Mbale Regional Referral Hospital in Mbale City, as well as from a traditional healer.

The Ministry has urged Ugandans to exercise caution and adhere to standard operating procedures (SOPs) to prevent the spread of the disease to the larger population.

In response to the outbreak, the Ministry has activated its Incident Management Team and dispatched Rapid Response Teams to Mbale City and Saidina Abubakar Islamic Hospital in Matugga.

Contact listing has also commenced, with 44 contacts identified, including 30 health workers and patients from Mulago, 11 family members of the deceased, and four health workers from Saidina Abubakar Islamic Hospital in Matugga.

This is not the first time Uganda has battled an Ebola outbreak. In 2022, the country experienced a similar outbreak in Mubende district, resulting in several deaths, including those of health workers.
