Kisoro District has a new representative in Parliament, following the swearing-in of Grace Ngabirano Akifeza as the District Woman Member of Parliament.
Akifeza, an independent candidate, won the by-election held on November 14, 2024, with 50,459 votes, defeating her closest rival, Rose Kabagenyi of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Party, who garnered 44,982 votes.
Akifeza’s victory fills the vacancy left by the late Hon. Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, who passed away in September 2024. Nyirabashitsi was also the State Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs.
During the swearing-in ceremony, Speaker Anita Among congratulated Akifeza on her successful election and urged her to support Parliament’s mission of being a people-centered institution.
Among handed Akifeza a copy of the Constitution and the Rules of Procedure of Parliament to guide her legislative duties.
Akifeza has been assigned to the Sectoral Committee on Education and Sports and the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Local Government).
With her background in human rights, having served as a senior rehabilitation officer with the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, and later with the National Human Rights Organization of Kenya, Akifeza is well-equipped to serve her constituents.
As Akifeza begins her journey as Kisoro’s new Woman Member of Parliament, she has pledged to represent her constituents with dedication and a focus on development.
Her supporters and fellow leaders are hopeful that her leadership will usher in positive change for Kisoro District.
