A dramatic turn of events has unfolded in the Kisoro District Woman Member of Parliament by-election as police launch a manhunt for Bufumbira North MP, John Kamara.
The MP is accused of involvement in ballot stuffing at the Busanani polling station. According to Elly Maate, police spokesperson for the Kigezi region, authorities are working to apprehend Kamara.
Despite the tension, Maate reports that the voting process has been relatively calm, with isolated incidents of violence attributed to intoxicated voters supporting specific candidates.
The by-election aims to fill the seat left vacant by the late Sarah Nyirabashitsi Mateke, who passed away on September 7, 2024.
Six candidates are vying for the seat, including Sultana Salim of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and Rose Kabagyeni of the National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Kabagyeni, a former Kisoro District Woman MP, won the NRM primaries with 39,941 votes.
