A plenary session in Uganda’s Parliament turned violent today, prompting Speaker Annet Anita Among to abruptly adjourn proceedings and leave her seat.
The chaos erupted as legislators debated bills but waiting on contentious Coffee Amendment Bill 2024.
The session saw heavy security presence, sparking concerns from opposition members, including MP Zaake Francis Butebi (NUP), who claimed to have spotted a gun-toting individual behind the Speaker’s seat.
When the Sergeant-at-Arms investigated, a scuffle broke out, and the Speaker fled her seat.
President Museveni allegedly supports the bill, having met with NRM MPs from Buganda on Tuesday to strategize its passage.
