Kampala, Uganda – The Uganda Police Force (UPF) has strongly condemned the recent sanctions imposed by the United States on four of its officers, describing them as “unjustified” and damaging to the force’s reputation.
The four officers – Bob Kagarura, Elly Womanya, Alex Mwine, and Hamdan Twesigye – along with their immediate family members, have been barred from entering the US due to alleged human rights violations.
UPF Chief Political Commissioner AIGP Ubaldo Bamunoba criticized the sanctions, stating they tarnish the image of the Uganda Police Force.
“These sanctions depict the Uganda Police Force in a bad light, suggesting that our officers disregard Ugandans’ rights,” Bamunoba said.
However, opposition leaders, including Bobi Wine, have welcomed the US sanctions. Wine took to social media to commend the US, saying they “have done the right thing”.
This comes amidst growing tensions between the Ugandan government and opposition parties.
The Uganda Police Force has urged the US to reconsider the sanctions, arguing they will harm bilateral relations between the two countries.
The US sanctions aim to hold accountable those responsible for human rights abuses in Uganda.
