The High Court in Kampala has denied bail to opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused, Hajj Obeid Lutale, citing the seriousness of the treason charges against them.
Justice Rosette Comfort Kania ruled that the duo’s case is one of the most significant in Uganda, making them ineligible for bail.
Dr. Kizza Besigye, 68, was arrested in Nairobi and extradited to Uganda in November 2024, facing treason charges alongside his aide, Hajj Obeid Lutale.
They’ve been held at Luzira Prison since their arrest. Besigye’s bail application, filed nearly two months ago, cites his advanced age and deteriorating health as grounds for release.
The prosecution opposed the bail application, citing concerns over national security and the gravity of the charges.
They argue that releasing Besigye could interfere with ongoing investigations. The court’s decision to deny bail has significant implications for Besigye and Lutale, who will remain in detention at Luzira Prison.
The case has drawn attention from human rights organizations, which have called for adherence to legal procedures and respect for individual rights.

Besigye’s supporters have expressed concern over his health and prolonged detention, urging the court to consider his age and health in future rulings.
