Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has shared a heartfelt message marking the one-year anniversary of the arrest and detention of former opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and his colleague Obeid Lutale.

Dr. Besigye was arrested in Nairobi, Kenya, on November 16, 2024, while attending a book launch event organized by Martha Karua, a Kenyan politician.
According to reports, Besigye was abducted by individuals believed to be Ugandan security operatives and taken to Uganda without following due process.
The Ugandan government has been accused of violating international law and Kenya’s sovereignty by arresting Besigye without proper extradition procedures.
Besigye’s wife, Winnie Byanyima, has expressed concerns about her husband’s safety and called for his immediate release.

Besigye is currently facing charges, including possession of firearms and undermining Uganda’s security, and is being held at Luzira Prison.
Kyagulanyi’s message highlights the challenges faced by Besigye, including declined bail applications and a denied request for the judge to recuse himself.
“We continue to stand in solidarity with Dr. Besigye and all the other political prisoners,” Kyagulanyi said, expressing NUP’s support for Besigye and others detained under similar circumstances.
