Kampala, Uganda – The National Unity Platform (NUP) is expected to announce its candidates for the Kawempe North parliamentary by-election and the Kazo-Angola councillor by-election today.
The Kawempe North parliamentary seat became vacant following the death of former MP Muhammad Ssegirinya on January 9, 2025.
Ten aspirants have been cleared to contest for the NUP ticket, including Luwemba Lusswa Muhammad, a former aide to the late MP, lawyer Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola, Umar Magara, Saulo Kulya Zziwa, Serunkuuma Salim (also known as Mafu Mafu), Kakyika Fredrick, Dr. Charles Rubagumya, Eng. Ssenkungu Kenneth, Mathias Mulumba, and Moses Nsereko.
According to Mercy Walukamba, Chairperson of the NUP Electoral Management Committee, the party has completed the vetting process and is ready to announce its candidates for both the Kawempe North parliamentary seat and the Kazo-Angola councillor seat.
“We have followed our procedures and guidelines to ensure a fair and transparent process,” Walukamba said.
David Lewis Rubongoya, Secretary General of the NUP, added that the party’s candidate selection process is independent and merit-based.
“The leadership of the party has no influence over who becomes the NUP candidate.
Our team of experts has been in Kawempe North to interact with the people and understand who they believe will best represent their needs,” Rubongoya explained.
According to Rubongoya, the NUP candidates were evaluated based on a ground survey worth 50 marks, a debate performance worth 10 marks, and community feedback worth 40 marks, making a total of 100%. “It is from these three parameters
