The National Unity Platform (NUP) flag contest in Mubende Municipality has intensified, with Ismael Segawa, popularly known as Sureman Segawa, rallying support and cautioning against potential defectors.

Segawa, a renowned radio sports commentator with Radio Simba, has been touring the municipality, drumming up support and warning against politicians seeking positions for personal gain.

During his tour, a concerned citizen asked Segawa about his plans if he doesn’t secure the NUP flag.

“You ask me if they don’t give me the card I will stab myself in the ground and drink poison or I will fight to come as an independent,” Segawa recalled. “I want to tell you that we in NUP do not fight, we believe in the plan of our president (Robert Kyagulanyi) that he put in place.”

Segawa also warned against politicians seeking positions for personal gain.

“And beware of those who are looking for positions, coming from here to there those people beware of them,” he said.

“It means they wanted leadership but they did not want to lead us looking for a position they could take to eat, you will not hear us that we went to Kasambya to stand as councilors, tomorrow as Mayor and the other day member of Parliament because they didn’t vote for us somewhere.

For us we are going to stay here in the municipality because it’s where we were born and grew up.”

Segawa’s emergence in the NUP flag contest  sent shockwaves among his competitors.

Much like Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, who unexpectedly rose to prominence in Uganda’s political scene, Segawa’s candidacy has caught many off guard. His unexpected rise has given his competitors sleepless nights, as they struggle to understand how a relatively unknown figure has managed to gain so much traction.

A National Unity Platform official has clarified that the party’s flag will be awarded based on grassroots support, not secretariat backing.

“Voters are on the ground, not in the secretariat,” the official said. “We won’t announce any positions until the intending candidates have submitted their letters of interest.”

This approach is in line with Segawa’s emphasis on grassroots support.

Other candidates, including Sumayiya Nabawanuka, Bob Richard Kyamanywa, and Andrew Walubi, are also vying for the NUP flag though some of them are said to come independent if not given nup card.

While they have their own strengths and weaknesses, Segawa’s commitment to the party and its principles is undeniable.

As the 2026 general elections approach, the stakes are high, and only the strongest candidates will emerge victorious.

The NUP flag contest in Mubende Municipality is shaping up to be a closely contested race, with several candidates vying for the top spot.
