Kampala, Uganda – Today, the National Unity Platform (NUP) joined the global community in celebrating the International Day for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
The event, held in Kampala, brought together NUP leaders, members, and supporters to recognize the invaluable contributions of PWDs to the struggle for freedom and democracy in Uganda.
Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, leader of the NUP, took to his Facebook page to express his solidarity with PWDs and to honor the bravery and resilience of comrades who have been released from prison after months or years of detention without trial.
The event provided a platform for recently released comrades to share their testimonies and highlight the injustices they suffered while in detention.
Among them were Olivia Lutaaya, who spent nearly four years in military detention, Magala Umar, who was detained at the start of 2023, and Sammy Okanya, who was arrested during the anti-corruption protests in July.
Their powerful testimonies and re-commitment to the struggle despite the punishment they have suffered served as a great source of renewed strength and inspiration to the NUP leadership and members.
The celebration of the International Day for PWDs was also a reminder that the struggle for freedom and democracy in Uganda is inclusive and affects all citizens, regardless of their abilities.
The NUP emphasized the importance of combining efforts and bringing unique abilities to the table to end the Museveni dictatorship and restore democracy in Uganda.
