Kampala, Uganda – Former State Minister for Lands, Housing, and Urban Development under President Yoweri Museveni’s administration, Isaac Musumba, has been sentenced to six months in Luzira Prison for failing to repay a debt of over 160 million shillings.
Musumba’s troubles began when he took a loan from businessman Charles Wakwale in 2023, promising to repay within four days but consistently avoided repayment.
Wakwale’s lawyer, Dick Kisira, stated that Musumba claimed to be out of the country on repayment dates, evading his responsibilities.
The Commercial Court’s decision came after multiple arrest warrants were issued against Musumba.
In a last-ditch effort to avoid imprisonment, Musumba offered 10 million shillings in court and requested a 21-day extension to settle the remaining balance.
However, Wakwale opposed this, fearing Musumba would continue to evade payment.
Lady Justice Patience Tumusiime Rubagumya ruled in Wakwale’s favor, ordering Musumba to repay the loan plus legal costs.
The court ultimately sentenced Musumba to six months in prison unless the outstanding debt is paid.
