Kampala, Uganda – Deputy Speaker of Uganda’s 11th Parliament, Rt Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, narrowly escaped death after the helicopter he was traveling in crashed on Saturday evening 03-08-2024 at Nyakisharara airstrip in Mbarara city.
The aircraft experienced a technical issue and had to return to the airstrip, where it caught fire upon landing.
Thankfully, Tayebwa and the crew had disembarked quickly after landing.
According to sources, Tayebwa was returning from the Kuhingira ceremony of Ms Edinah Ainomugisha and Mr Albert Bagabe, daughter of National Water and Sewerage Corporation Managing Director, Eng. Silver Mugisha and Hon. Annet Katusiime Mugisha, Woman MP for Bushenyi that took place in Bushenyi.
Tayebwa confirmed the incident on social media, reassuring the public that he and his colleagues were unharmed.
“Dear all, my colleagues and I are all okay.No one is hurt,” he posted on Sunday morning.
Tayebwa had earlier attended a state function in Nebbi, West Nile, before traveling to Bushenyi by helicopter.
The cause of the crash is yet to be confirmed, and details of the incident are still emerging.
The incident has sent shockwaves across the country, with many expressing relief that Tayebwa and his colleagues escaped unharmed.
An investigation into the crash is expected to be launched to determine its cause.
