Kampala, Uganda – Human rights activist Habib Buwembo has expressed outrage over the court’s refusal to refund his 3 million Ugandan shillings bail cash.
The magistrate’s court, under the jurisdiction of Rehma Nassozi, had previously dropped all charges against Buwembo.
Buwembo’s troubles began when he accused Speaker Anita Among of “stealing iron sheets” intended for the people of Karamoja, a mineral-rich sub-region.
He was subsequently charged with spreading malicious information. Although the charges were later dropped, Buwembo’s bail cash has not been refunded.
“Bail refund is my right,” Buwembo asserted as he stormed the High Court premises in Kampala this morning, demanding a refund of his bail money. He has pledged not to leave the premises until he is paid his money.
His protest highlights concerns about the Ugandan justice system’s handling of bail refunds.
Buwembo’s case is not an isolated incident. In a previous instance, he was arrested and charged with unlawful assembly. Although he was granted bail, initially he struggled to raise the required 3 million Ugandan shillings, leading to his temporary return to Luzira Prison.
However, through the efforts of his supporters, Buwembo eventually managed to raise the bail amount and was released from prison.
