Yumbe, Uganda – Swaib Goodyear, the former head teacher of Dradranga Primary School, was sentenced to seven years in prison by the Chief Magistrate Court in Yumbe District.
Goodyear was convicted on two counts of forgery and theft, which occurred in 2021.
The court heard that Goodyear forged a letter of transfer from Dradranga Primary School to Gichara Primary School, allowing him to change signatories on the school’s Stanbic Bank account.
He then withdrew Shs8.3 million from the account, meant for teaching and learning purposes.
Presiding Chief Magistrate Freddie Awacnedi on Wednesday 14-08-2024 found Goodyear guilty, stating that he had “beaten the security system” and caused a significant financial gap in Gichara Primary School.
The magistrate rejected Goodyear’s plea for leniency, citing the seriousness of the offense and the fact that the case had dragged on for too long.
Goodyear was sentenced to 2 years in prison for forgery and 5 years for theft, to be served concurrently.
He was also ordered to repay the stolen Shs8.3 million to Gichara Primary School.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of accountability in public office and the repercussions of misusing authority for selfish purposes.
