Kampala, Uganda – A sense of unease has settled over Uganda after General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of President Yoweri Museveni and current Chief of Defense Forces (CDF), declared that those who do not support his presidential ambitions will face trouble.
In a statement posted on his social media account, formerly on Twitter, Gen. Kainerugaba ominously warned, “When I become President of this beautiful country, anyone who doubts it will be in trouble!”
Gen. Kainerugaba’s statement has ignited a firestorm of concern, not only among opposition leaders but also within the ranks of the ruling NRM party, where some members are hesitant to support his presidential ambitions.
With President Museveni set to turn 82 in 2026 and having led the country for 40 years, many believe a transition of power is already underway.
Gen. Kainerugaba’s statement has only added to the trepidation, given his current control of the military as CDF.
Opposition leaders and human rights activists have expressed alarm over the veiled threat, warning of a potential crackdown on dissenting voices and a further erosion of democratic freedoms.
As the country teeters on the brink of a potentially contentious transition, one thing is clear: Gen. Kainerugaba’s statement has sent a chilling message to anyone who dares oppose him.
