A group of activists known as the Save Ayivu Initiative is spearheading a campaign for the creation of an independent Ayivu District, arguing that the community’s incorporation into Arua City in 2020 has had detrimental effects.
The initiative, which comprises elders, religious leaders, youth, politicians, and women, claims that the city’s formation has led to reduced service delivery, job losses, and a diminished sense of identity among the Ayivu people.
According to the activists, the creation of Arua City has resulted in a decline in the quality and accessibility of essential services, leaving residents with limited access to vital amenities.
They also point to job losses and economic instability as major concerns, asserting that the city’s administration has failed to address the unique needs and challenges of the Ayivu community.
Moreover, the activists argue that the Ayivu people have lost their sense of identity and autonomy since being absorbed into Arua City.
They believe that granting Ayivu district status would enable the community to govern itself more effectively, make decisions that benefit its people, and preserve its cultural heritage.
The Save Ayivu Initiative is now calling on the government to reduce the size of Arua City and grant Ayivu district status.
They argue that this move would not only address the community’s concerns but also promote more effective governance, economic development, and social cohesion.
