Kampala, Uganda – A group of undeployed medical interns has threatened to storm the Ugandan Parliament during its upcoming regional plenary sessions in Gulu City, Northern Uganda, if their demands for deployment are not met.
The interns, who have been seeking deployment for an extended period, claim to have exhausted all avenues, including visits to the President’s office, Speaker’s office, and Ministry of Health, without any tangible results.
The Ministry of Health, led by General Duties minister Hanifa Kawooya, has cited financial constraints as the main obstacle to deploying all eligible interns.
The ministry received Shs35 billion, which can only cater for 1,500 interns out of 2,700 eligible degree holders.
The cost of deploying one intern is estimated at Shs1.3 million per month or Shs15.6 million annually.
The ministry proposes to deploy the 2023 cohort, leaving out the 2024 cohort due to limited funds.
The interns have vowed to take drastic action, including storming Parliament, if a supplementary budget is not passed to facilitate their deployment.
The regional plenary sessions are scheduled for August 28-30 in Gulu City.
