Renowned Ugandan lawyer and former Attorney General, Kiddu Makubuya, has passed away, his daughter Rebecca Nabagala has confirmed.
The details surrounding his death are still unclear, but his passing marks the end of an era in Uganda’s legal and political spheres.
Makubuya’s death comes after recent false reports of his passing on June 3, which were debunked by his daughter. Despite this, concerns for his well-being remained.
Born on July 30, 1949, Makubuya had a distinguished career in law, politics, and academia.
He worked as a special assistant at the Faculty of Law, Makerere University, in 1974 and 1975, before being promoted to lecturer in 1979.
He rose through the ranks, becoming a senior lecturer in 1982, associate professor in 1984, and head of the Department of Law and Jurisprudence until 1995.
Makubuya was also a partner in Kasolo & Khiddu Advocates, a private law firm, and served as editor-in-chief of the Uganda Law Society Review from 1984 to 1987.
He was a member of the Uganda Constitutional Commission, which drafted the 1995 Constitution of Uganda, and the Commission of Inquiry into Violations of Human Rights.
In addition to his professional experience, Makubuya served in various administrative capacities, including as an ex-officio member of the Uganda Law Council and the Management Committee of the Law Development Centre from 1981 to 1982.
He was also a member of several committees at Makerere University, including the Senate.
Makubuya’s areas of research interest included jurisprudence, family law, international law, law and development, human rights of women, land law and land planning, development finance, refugee law, constitutional law, law and population, and gender and law.
Makubuya joined politics in 1988 and was elected Member of Parliament for Katikamu South Constituency in 1996.
He held various ministerial positions, including State Minister for Luweero Triangle, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Minister of Education and Sports, and Minister for General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister.
He served as Uganda’s Attorney General from 2005 to 2011, before resigning from the cabinet in 2012 amid allegations of misappropriation of government funds.
Preparations for his burial are underway, and further details on his passing and final rites are expected to be released soon.
