“A nursery/primary teacher must have a degree, but an MP or president only needs an A-level certificate.

It’s amazing how lawmakers are making fools of themselves,” Gashumba said.

“This bill is going to make fools of our lawmakers. A degree paper qualification for all, except themselves.”

Gashumba’s comments come as a proposed bill before Parliament seeks to enhance the quality of education by mandating that all teachers possess a minimum of a degree qualification.

The bill has sparked intense debate within the education sector, with proponents arguing that it aims to elevate education standards and ensure students receive instruction from highly qualified professionals.

However, Gashumba’s criticism highlights the perceived hypocrisy of lawmakers who would impose stringent qualification standards on teachers while holding themselves to a lower standard.

“Imagine a country where a chair of an ICT Committee in parliament who can’t even open his own Gmail, but part of a house pressing primary teachers to get degrees,” Gashumba added. “Prayers alone can’t save our Country.”

As the bill navigates the legislative process, it remains to be seen how lawmakers will respond to Gashumba’s criticism and the concerns of other stakeholders.
