Nairobi, Kenya – Despite President Ruto’s recent announcement of a salary increase for national police service members, officers attached to the Kenya Prison service are unhappy as they claim the government failed to fulfill its promise of a 13% salary increment.
According to reports, a group of prison officers staged a go-slow on Thursday 1-08-2024, failing to report to work in protest of the unmet promise.
This development comes after President Ruto’s announcement, which seemed to have left police officers delighted.
The reasons behind the failure to increase the salaries of prison officers are unclear. However, prison officers have long complained of discrimination and poor treatment, including claims that some junior officers have not received new uniforms despite serving for over a decade.
The protest by prison officers highlights the need for the government to address the concerns of all law enforcement agencies, ensuring that promises made are kept and that officers receive fair treatment and compensation for their services.
