A 28-year-old man was shot and killed by a security guard at Kayonza Gold ore mine in Kitumbi subcounty, Kassanda district, early on March 17, 2026.
The incident occurred when the guard, Otubo Simon Peter of Eagle Eye Security Agency, attempted to stop a group of intruders trying to steal gold ore from the mine.
According to police, the intruders fled when confronted by the guards, prompting Otubo to discharge a bullet that hit Ezedi Murundi in the back, killing him instantly.
The deceased was a resident of Namulanda trading center in Kitumbi subcounty.
A report was made to police, and the body has been taken to Kassanda health center for postmortem. Otubo Simon Peter has been apprehended to support investigations.
SSP Lameck Kigozi, Police spokesperson for Wamala Region, confirmed the incident, warning people to avoid tresspassing in gold mining areas, especially at night.
“We appeal to people in these Gold mining areas not to be tempted to tresspass in these mining sites at awkward hours for any reason because they’re well guarded,” he said.
