A young military officer, Lt. (Dr) Samson Haruna, was laid to rest on Saturday, November 15, 2025, in his hometown in Pushit district, Plateau State, amidst uncontrollable tears and mourning from family, friends, and colleagues.

Lt. Haruna, 31, a medical doctor attached to the 6 Battalion Regimental Medical Officer, was set ablaze by his wife, Retyit Dalong Haruna, during a domestic dispute at Wellington Bassey Barracks, Ibagwa, Akwa Ibom, on an unspecified date.
He succumbed to severe burns weeks later, leaving behind a grieving community and a devastated family.
The incident, which has left the military community in shock, occurred just five months into the couple’s marriage.
According to sources, the wife allegedly doused Lt. Haruna with petrol and set him on fire following a heated argument.
The young officer sustained severe burns and was immediately stabilized at the Military Reference Section (MRS) in the barracks before being evacuated to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital for further management.
Despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life, Lt. Haruna passed away due to the severity of his injuries.
The wife, Retyit, has been handed over to the police for further investigations and is expected to face charges in court.
Attempts by her family to exonerate her from the crime have been met with skepticism, with sources insisting she was the main suspect.
The burial was conducted with full military honors, a fitting tribute to the fallen officer’s service and dedication to the military.
