Nairobi, Kenya – In a heartfelt message to the nation, President William Ruto today paid tribute to the late Raila Odinga, the former Prime Minister of Kenya, who passed away on October 15, 2025.
President Ruto described Odinga as a towering figure in Kenyan history, a quintessential progressive, and reformer who dedicated his life to the fight for democracy, human rights, and economic opportunity for all.
“We are blessed to live in a country that has been shaped by the will, the leadership, and the vision of the Right Hon. Raila Odinga,” President Ruto said. “With an unshakable faith in the values of our country and the character of our people, Hon. Raila Odinga fought for our democracy and led the path towards our new constitutional order.”
The President described Odinga as a peacemaker who always put country first, and whose optimism, strength, and humility epitomized the Kenyan spirit. “He always believed that our best days are yet to come,” President Ruto added.
President Ruto also paid tribute to Odinga’s personal qualities, describing him as a man who carried himself with courage and grace, and whose voice echoed with purpose.
“He bore the scars of struggle with dignity, knowing that freedom was not free and that truth often demands sacrifice,” the President said.
The President revealed that he had a close relationship with Odinga, describing him as a “big brother, a mentor, a confidant, and a selfless patriot.”
“Every time I needed wise counsel, I turned to him time and again. He never once failed me and told me the truth every time, even when the truth was hard,” President Ruto said.
President Ruto also offered his condolences to the Odinga family, saying: “From my immediate family, Rachel and the children, we want to assure Mama Ida, Rosemary, Raila Junior, Winnie, Senator Oburu, and the entire Odinga family that we stand with them in this moment of grief.”

The President urged all Kenyans to join hands in celebrating Odinga’s legacy, saying that his impact on the country, Africa, and the world would be felt for generations to come.
“Above all, I urge all Kenyans to join hands as we celebrate the incredible legacy of this towering figure in our history,” President Ruto said.
