Kerala, India – Raila Odinga, the former Prime Minister of Kenya, has passed away at the age of 80. He died on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at the Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital and Research Centre in Koothattukulam, Kerala, due to cardiac failure.
According to the hospital authorities, Odinga suffered a cardiac arrest during his morning walk on the campus around 9 am.
Despite being rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead at the facility.
His body will be embalmed, and further steps will be taken in accordance with the instructions from the Ministry of External Affairs and the Kenyan Embassy in New Delhi.
Odinga had been undergoing treatment at the hospital for the past five days, accompanied by his daughter and personal doctor.
The hospital had previously treated his daughter, Rosemary Odinga, who lost her sight in 2017 due to optic nerve damage. She regained her vision after undergoing treatment at the facility in 2019.
A towering figure in Kenyan politics, Odinga served as the country’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 under the Grand Coalition Government.
He was a veteran opposition leader and the head of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). Odinga was known for his passionate advocacy for democracy, governance reforms, and social justice.
Tributes are pouring in from across the world, celebrating Odinga’s legacy as a champion of democracy, dialogue, and reform.
His contributions to Kenya’s political landscape will be remembered for generations to come.
