More than 432,000 Senior Four candidates across Uganda have commenced their Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations today, despite an ongoing teachers’ strike that has raised concerns about supervision and administration.
The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) confirmed that a total of 432,159 candidates are registered to sit for this year’s UCE exams, marking a 12.1% increase from last year’s 379,748 candidates.
The exams are being held in 4,308 centers nationwide under the theme, “Embracing security and holistic assessment of learners in a dynamic environment” ¹.
UNEB has urged teachers to separate their grievances from the examination process, appealing to them to join in supervising the exams.
However, the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) has maintained that its members will not participate in any examination activities until their demands are met.
The exams began with Geography Paper One in the morning and Biology (Theory) in the afternoon. UNEB has deployed 190 specialized personnel to assist 679 Special Needs Education (SNE) candidates who require extra support.
