The Inter-Party Organisation for Dialogue (IPOD) has rejected the National Unity Platform’s (NUP) recent attempt to rejoin the platform, citing failure to follow the formal procedure required under its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
In a letter dated October 10, 2025, IPOD reminded NUP that joining the organization involves more than just signing the MoU.
According to the letter, Article 5.2.7 of the MoU requires a political party to express its interest in writing to the Secretary to Council, after which the IPOD Council considers and approves the application before formal accession.
“The process of joining IPOD is distinct from simply signing the MoU,” the letter reads in part. “NUP should submit a formal written Expression of Interest, affirming the party’s commitment to the objectives, principles, and values of IPOD.”
NUP withdrew from IPOD in 2021, citing inability to dialogue with President Museveni, whom they accused of undermining democracy and human rights.
However, the party recently expressed interest in returning to IPOD, a move that has attracted public scrutiny and speculation.
IPOD’s latest response reaffirms its position that membership is based on clear institutional procedures rather than political convenience.
The organization emphasized that NUP must formally express commitment to the principles of dialogue and cooperation before being reconsidered for re-entry.
As it stands, NUP’s attempt to rejoin the platform remains in limbo, pending the submission and approval of a proper expression of interest.
