Nairobi, Kenya – The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has issued a statement dismissing a memo circulating on social media that purports to outline the commission’s plans in the event of Parliament’s dissolution.
The memo, which claims that the IEBC would conduct fresh elections for all parliamentary seats, has been deemed “fake news” by the commission.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the IEBC urged the public not to engage in spreading the false information, emphasizing that the commission would be guided strictly by the Constitution in the event of any such ruling.
The development comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions between President William Ruto and Members of Parliament.
On Monday, President Ruto accused lawmakers of accepting bribes in exchange for passing legislation, specifically pointing to Senate members who allegedly received Ksh150 million to influence the outcome of a matter before the House.
“We will not shame them; we will apprehend them,” President Ruto said during a Joint Parliamentary group meeting between the Kenya Kwanza Alliance and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.
He claimed to have raw intelligence indicating that some members of the House had received up to Ksh10 million to pass the Anti-Money Laundering Bill.
The President’s accusations prompted the Senate Public Accounts Committee to demand that he provide evidence to support his claims.
In response, President Ruto formed the Multi-Agency Team on War Against Graft (MAT) to intensify the fight against corruption.
However, the High Court suspended the MAT on Wednesday, pending the hearing of a petition challenging its establishment.
Nakuru-based surgeon Magare Gikenyi and three others had moved to court, arguing that the Head of State acted outside his constitutional mandate in establishing the new body.
The petitioners sought orders to declare the MAT unlawful, irregular, and unconstitutional.
The IEBC’s statement serves as a reminder of the importance of verifying information before dissemination, particularly in the context of sensitive political developments.
