David Lewis Rubongoya, Secretary General of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has expressed outrage over the arrest and detention of party leaders and supporters by security agencies.
In a statement posted on his official Facebook account, Rubongoya revealed that 15 NUP leaders and supporters were picked up from different locations in Lubaga Division and charged with “Defacing Museveni’s posters.”
According to Rubongoya, the real reason for their detention is to instill fear in the population ahead of President Museveni’s visit to Kampala, and to prevent them from leading protests and demonstrations.
“The real reason for their detention is because Gen. Museveni will be visiting Kampala, and they must make sure that they instill fear in the population in case they choose to lead protests and demonstrations,” Rubongoya stated.
This incident is not isolated, as NUP has faced numerous allegations of abductions and detentions by security agencies.
Rubongoya further condemned the regime, saying, “The very regime, which normally sends thugs to remove our posters as they boast on camera, are now charging our supporters with defacing posters- moreover of a person who is not yet a candidate! The charges are as ridiculous as the police who arrested these comrades, the prosecutor who sanctioned them and the judicial officer who entertained them.”
Rubongoya highlighted the double standards and persecution faced by NUP members, adding, “This is the same regime that has made it impossible for us to pin posters in most districts across the country! Each day, we receive reports of our prospective candidates’ posters being removed by regime operatives. At times, those found pinning them up are arrested or assaulted.”
The NUP leaders and supporters have been remanded to Luzira Prison until July 29, when the case will come up for mention.
