Tragedy has struck Alaska as a small plane carrying 10 people was found crashed near Nome, with all occupants presumed dead.
The United States Coast Guard in Alaska confirmed on Friday that the wreckage of the privately operated Cessna 208B Grand Caravan was discovered near Nome, approximately 885 kilometers northwest of Anchorage.
According to Coast Guard spokesperson Mike Salerno, two personnel were able to get close to the wreckage and spotted three bodies inside. Salerno stated that “unfortunately, it does not appear to be a survivable crash”.
Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy expressed his condolences, saying he and his wife were “heartbroken” over the tragedy.
Governor Dunleavy praised the search teams for their tireless efforts and asked all Alaskans to keep the affected families and communities in their thoughts and prayers.
Senator Lisa Murkowski, representing Alaska, also shared her sadness, highlighting the close-knit nature of the Alaskan community. “Alaska is a big small town…
When tragedy strikes, we’re never far removed from the Alaskans directly impacted. But that also means we come together as a community to grieve and heal,” Murkowski said.
This devastating crash marks the third aviation disaster in the US within a week. On January 28, a mid-air collision between a regional commercial jetliner and a US Army helicopter near Washington, DC, resulted in 67 fatalities.
Two days later, a medical transportation plane crashed into a Philadelphia neighborhood, killing six people on board and one person on the ground.
