Kampala, Uganda – The National Unity Platform (NUP) has outlined its selection process for the party’s flagbearer in the upcoming Kawempe North by-election.
According to NUP Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya, the decision will be split between a public debate and a constituency survey.
The 10 aspirants who expressed interest will engage in a public debate, accounting for 50% of the selection criteria.
“We shall allow a few supporters for each candidate at the debate to avoid chaos,” Rubongoya stated.
The remaining 50% will be determined through a ground survey conducted by the party’s Election Management Committee to assess the candidates’ popularity and suitability among voters in Kawempe North.
By the close of nominations, NUP had confirmed 11 contenders for the party ticket, including Luwemba Lusswa Muhammad, Luyimbazi Nalukoola, and Umar Magara, among others.
The Kawempe North parliamentary seat became vacant following the death of former MP Muhammad Ssegirinya on January 9, 2025.
The Electoral Commission has set the by-election for March 13, 2025, with campaign meetings scheduled from February 28 to March 11, 2025.
