Kampala, Uganda – In a significant development, Umar Magala, a former National Unity Platform (NUP) registrar for Kawempe, and fellow NUP member Kalyango Muhammud, have been released on bail after nearly two years in detention.

Magala and Muhammud were abducted by the Directorate of Intelligence Services (DIS), formerly known as the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), and the Joint Anti-Terrorism Task Force (JATT) and held incommunicado for several days before being paraded in court to face politically-motivated charges.

Their release comes as a welcome relief to their supporters and the NUP community. The party has expressed gratitude to their legal team for their tireless efforts in securing the release of the two members.

However, the NUP has also reiterated its demand for the release of all political prisoners who remain in detention.

The party’s president, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, welcomed Magala and Muhammud, emphasizing the need for continued advocacy for the rights of all Ugandans.

The release of Magala and Muhammud is a significant milestone in the ongoing struggle for democracy and human rights in Uganda.

As the country continues to grapple with issues of political repression and human rights abuses, the international community remains watchful, calling for greater respect for the rule of law and the protection of fundamental freedoms.
