Kampala, Uganda – In a striking example of the irony of fate, Ugandan opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye was abducted from Kenya on November 16, 2024, and forced to leave behind his personal belongings, including a box in Kilimani, Nairobi.
This incident bears a haunting resemblance to a similar event that occurred in 1983, when Janet Museveni, the wife of President Yoweri Museveni, fled from kidnappers in Nyeri, Kenya, leaving behind her daughter Natasha’s box.
Janet Museveni later recounted the incident in her writing, stating that she had to deceive the principal of Natasha’s school by telling her that she was taking her daughter home for the weekend.
President Museveni also referenced the incident in his book, “Sowing the Mustard Seed,” where he described African governments as “useless outfits” that were threatened by his family’s presence.
Fast forward to today, and it is President Museveni’s government that is accused of conducting high-profile abductions of opposition leaders, including Dr Besigye.
The irony of the situation is not lost on observers, who note that the Museveni government is now perpetrating the same kind of actions that it once condemned.
Dr Besigye’s abduction has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for his immediate release.
The opposition leader has been charged with unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, and is currently being held at Luzira Prison.
